CINCINNATI — Rising water levels on the Ohio River forced many families to change their annual Labor Day plans but boater Dave Koking wasn’t going to let inclement weather keep him from enjoying the Riverfest Fireworks display.

What You Need To Know

  • Watching the Riverfest Fireworks on the boat has been a tradition for families for more than 40 years
  • But this year because of rising water levels and a possible storm many boaters are deciding not to go
  • Boater Dave Koking is still going on the Ohio River despite the unpredictable weather
  • He’s been watching the fireworks on the Ohio River for more than a decade

The fireworks display has been a tradition in Cincinnati since 1977.

“Once I get out there I might change my mind and we might turn around and come back in if it gets too rocky,” said Koking. “But for the most part the boaters are pretty knowledgable down there and they do a good job.”

Koking, who said he’s been coming about every other year for the past two decades, planned to spend the day on the river with his girlfriend and some friends.

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer.

“It’s just a good time to get out with your friends and just enjoy the nice day. And hopefully, the weather holds up and it’s not rainy and (it’s) sunny we’ll have a good time down there,” he said.

The fireworks display is scheduled for 9 p.m. Sunday with events scheduled along the banks throughout the day.
