CANTON, Ohio — As schools head into Thanksgiving break next week, some districts across the country have decided to give teachers and employees extra time off. This week, Canton City Schools joined the list.
The district announced earlier this week that students and staff will now get Nov. 24 off. The district cited a rise in stress among educators who have had to cover more ground amid a shortage of substitute teachers.
“Our staff has put forth a Herculean effort in educating and supporting our students, families, and one another during a time that we hope can be called the post-pandemic phase,” Superintendent Jeff Talbert said. “I hope that this much-needed comp day shows that their work is appreciated and that everyone enjoys an extra day before the holiday.”
The district said that students will be sent home with meals on Nov. 23 to cover the meals missed on Nov. 24.
The district also announced that Jan. 14, Feb. 17, March 17 and May 3, 2022 will be staff work days. Students will stay home during these days, but staff will still report.
Canton is not the only Ohio school district to decide to extend Thanksgiving break. Springfield City Schools recently announced that the district will be closed for the entire week of Nov. 22-26. Previously, the district was slated to be closed Nov. 24-26.
