Gov. DeWine orders flags at half-staff on Pearl Harbor anniversary

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered flags in the state of Ohio to be lowered to half-staff Tuesday in remembrance of the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

The declaration takes effect from midnight to midnight on Tuesday, the governor’s office said. 

On Friday, President Joe Biden made a similar declaration ordering flags throughout the United States to be lowered in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. 

“Our Nation remains forever indebted to all those who gave their last full measure of devotion eight decades ago,” Biden said in his declaration. “We will never forget those who perished, and we will always honor our sacred obligation to care for our service members, veterans, and their families, caregivers, and survivors.”

According to the U.S. federal government, 2,335 members of the U.S. armed forces and 68 civilians were killed and 1,178 people were injured in the attack on Dec. 7, 1941. Of those killed, 2,008 were members of the Navy.

According to the Ohio History Connection, three Ohioans, Rear Adm. Isaac Campbell Kidd of Cleveland, Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Robert R. Scott of Massillon, and Seaman 1st Class James Richard Ward of Springfield were awarded Congressional Medals of Honor. They were among numerous Ohioans killed in the attack, the Ohio History Connection said.
