OHIO — Today is the day so many teams have been working hard toward: The OHSAA Girls Basketball State Championship.

Starting out the day at 10:45 a.m., Worthington Christian will go up against Cincinnati Purcell Marian in the Division III Championship Game.

Worthington Christian defeated Waynedale, 55-24, in the Division III semifinal. It’s the school’s first championship game in its history, having lost in the 2001 state semifinals. Cincinnati Purcell Marian defeated Union Local, 59-43, in the first Division III state semifinal game. Purcell Marian looks to become the first school from the Cincinnati area to win a D-III girls basketball championship since Wyoming in 1996.

After that, Alter will take on Sheridan in the Division II Championship Game at 2 p.m. Alter used strong defense and three-point shooting to get back to the OHSAA Division II championship game, defeating Bishop Hartley, 69-33, in the state semifinals. Sheridan beat Norton 68-60 in triple overtime.

Later this afternoon at 5:15 p.m., New Knoxville goes up against Waterford in the Division IV Championship Game. New Knoxville played its usual tough defense on its way to a 39-28 win over Cincinnati Country Day in the first Division IV state semifinal. Today will be a chance for the team to win the school’s first ever girls state basketball title. Waterford trailed 28-19 early in the second half of the semifinal yesterday, rallying to beat Buckeye Central 53-39.

Rounding out the finals will be Mason against Reynoldsburg at 8:30 p.m. Mason went on a 14-0 run, opening a 38-20 lead, on the way to a 54-35 victory over Massillon Jackson in the first Division I state semifinal. Reynoldsburg’s pressure and tempo were too much for Anthony Wayne to handle, as the Raiders advanced to the OHSAA Girls Basketball Division I state championship game, winning 67-48.
