More than a month has passed since Russia invaded Ukraine. Russian forces have withdrawn from the capital region of Ukraine to refocus on the eastern part of the country, but the images of what was left behind in their wake have sparked global outrage.

The U.N. human rights office says it has documented at least 1,800 civilians killed in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to the U.N., 4.5 million who have fled the country, the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. Overall death tolls in the conflict are unclear.

After Russian forces withdrew from the capital region of Ukraine, graphic evidence of deliberate civilian killings emerged, leading to growing international condemnation; Russia has denied the accusations and falsely claimed that the images were staged.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday began referring to Russia’s actions in Ukraine as “genocide” for the first time, alleging that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “trying to wipe out the idea of even being a Ukrainian.”
