CLEVELAND — When summer break hits, kids are prone to the “summer slide,” meaning they’re likely to lose some of the learning they did during the school year, but the Cleveland Public Library hoped to help them keep some of information with its Summer Splash event.

What You Need To Know

  • Cleveland Public Library hosted a Summer Splash event in Public Square
  • The event is targeted to helping kids not slide in their education during the summer
  • The library wants kids to see reading as enjoyable while still having fun with activities like going to the pool

Cleveland’s Public Square was the backdrop for Cleveland Public Library’s Summer Splash event Wednesday, one of several events held to promote summer literacy.

As many kids enjoyed the warm day and the splash pad, they also came over to the library’s book bike. Librarians read them stories, sang songs and brought items like beach balls along for the kids to play with.

Annisha Jeffries, youth services manager at the Cleveland Public Library, was the person behind the book bike and reading the stories.

“We want everyone to know that the library is a fun place to be and when you come and visit us, you’re going to have a great experience,” she said.

Jeffries appreciates what using the book bike can do for the library.

“We’ve used this bike on many occasions just as a symbol to let people know that hey, we’re not just behind the four walls, we’re mobile and we have books,” she said.

Programs such as the Summer Splash can remind kids that although they can have fun during the summer, Jeffries wants parents and their kids to know they can also continue to grow in their education.

“We want to reinforce that reading and learning is essential, even during the summer months,” she said. “It’s essential to the young people when they’re out of school.”
