COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission issued an Air Quality Alert for regions of central Ohio remaining in effect into Tuesday night.

What You Need To Know

  • An Air Quality Alert was issued for Franklin, Delaware, Licking and Fairfield counties
  • The alert ends Tuesday at 10 p.m.
  • Sensitive groups of people, including children, elderly and people with asthma or COPD, should limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity

Franklin, Delaware, Licking and Fairfield counties, including Delaware, Columbus, Newark, Lancaster and Pickerington, will remain under the alert until 10 p.m.

MORPC started the alert for ozone pollution. The agency expects to see levels of ozone in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range on the Air Quality Index.

To decrease the potential for health issues, sensitive groups of people, including children, elderly and people with asthma or COPD, should limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity.

On Air Quality Alert days, MORPC said help reducing ozone formation might be done by taking the following actions:

  • Take the bus, carpool, bike or walk, instead of driving alone
  • Refuel a vehicle after 8 p.m., do not top off when refueling and tighten the gas cap
  • Do not idle a vehicle as exhaust contributes to the formation of ozone pollution
  • Avoid use of gas-powered lawn equipment on Air Quality Alert days
