CLEVELAND — It’s been 50 years since Title IX became law, and an event at Cleveland State University aimed to explore what it has accomplished, and what’s next for this landmark civil rights law.

What You Need To Know

  • Title IX became law 50 years ago
  • Charter Communications, ESPN and the Northeast Ohio Women’s Sports Alliance hosted a panel discussion on Title IX to mark the anniversary
  • An organizer of the event said a common misconception about Title IX is that it centers around sports, but it’s more about education as a whole

Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum News, joined ESPN and the Northeast Ohio Women’s Sports Alliance to hold a panel discussion that included educators, administrators and even a local student athlete from northeast Ohio.

Title IX bans any kind of sex-based discrimination from any organization that receives federal funds.

An organizer of the event said a common misconception about Title IX is that it centers on sports and said it’s more about education.

“It’s not just about sports. It’s about educational access and opportunities and protections for people regardless of gender and age and that didn’t get included into the law until 1988, where it was inclusive of all access points in education,” said Barb Anthony, executive director of NOWSA.

At the end of the event, Charter made a $2,500 donation to the Northeast Ohio Women’s Sports Alliance.
