AKRON, Ohio — It’s been more than a week since Akron police shot and killed Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, after a chase. Walker was not armed when he was shot more than 60 times as he tried to run from the vehicle.
Protests have been held in the city every night since Sunday, according to the Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett.
The chief said some of the protests have been peaceful while others have not, which prompted the city to reinstate its curfew.
The chief said he has met with the members family of Jayland Walker, and he is willing to talk with them again.
“It is heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking. They lost their son, their brother, their nephew, their cousin,” Mylett said. “It was just heartbreaking, you know? I personalize those things. It’s difficult. I’ll just leave it there.”
The chief sat down with Spectrum News reporter Kristen Anzuini to talk about Walker’s death, the protests that have followed and how officers are handling those protests.
