What You Need To Know

  • Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval will be in Washington D.C. Monday afternoon
  • He plans to discuss Cincinnati’s efforts to mitigate gun violence
  • Pureval recently outlined violence prevention strategies and programs

Pureval will meet with national public safety leaders and policy makers. He plans to celebrate the passage of the bipartisan Safer Communities Act and discuss the city’s ongoing effort to mitigate gun violence.

“I am extremely grateful for the Biden Administration and its understanding of the incredible challenges we’re facing, both locally and as a nation,” Pureval wrote in a news release. “We cannot do this work alone, and having leaders in Washington to back us up is paramount in creating safer communities for all.”

Pureval recently outlined violence prevention strategies and programs aimed at cutting down gun violence in Cincinnati during the summer, which aligns with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

The bipartisan proposal is aimed at protecting children, schools and reducing threats across the country. It is one of the most significant steps taken by Congress in decades to address gun violence.

The act focuses money toward mental health and intervention programs, expanded background checks for individuals under 21 who purchase firearms, and narrowing the “boyfriend loophole” by prohibiting someone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as part of a dating relationship from purchasing or possessing a firearm for at least five years.
