COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio State University quarterback J.T. Barrett is heading to Michigan to join the Detroit Lions coaching staff as an offensive assistant, according to a Tweet put out by the Lions.

Further details about Barrett’s position with the Lions have not yet been released.

The former OSU quarterback accumulated 9,434 passing yards, 3,263 rushing yards and 147 total touchdowns (104 passing, 43 rushing) during his four years as a starter at the university.

Barrett, 27, was undrafted in 2018, but signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent. He was released the following off season and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Saints again, but was waived each time.

In January, Barrett signed with Edmonton Elks, but an injury in March moved him to the retired list.
