CINCINNATI — Cincinnati teens got the chance to use pounds of plastic, paper and fabric waste in a trash fashion show, called “Trashion.”

What You Need To Know

  • Trashion invited participants to make costumes out of trash
  • The event aims to raise awareness of waste and inspire creative solutions
  • “ish” hosted the event at Cincinnati’s Mockbee
  • The Recycling and Reuse Hub supplied most of the materials
  • Artists assisted participants with the construction of their costumes

A Cincinnati Jewish arts organization, ish, hosted the event in collaboration with Transform, hoping to get teenagers engaged in eco-art and activism.

Participants gathered most of their supplies from Cincinnati’s Recycling and Reuse Hub.

“They have an unbelievable amount of plastic bags,” Louis Rosenberg, one participant, said. “And also just so much random stuff.”

Rosenberg took upholstery samples that were at the hub, using them to make some of the set dressings for the show.

Many other costumes included dresses made from bubble wrap, papier mâché wigs, and vests made from tabs of soda cans.

Artists with ish worked with the participants on costuming and ideas at several workshops leading up to the event.

Rosenberg said it was one of the first opportunities he’s had to experiment with trash art.

“It definitely makes you think more about that kind of stuff,” he said.

The event’s theme was “love and destruction in a post-apocalyptic wasteland,” which Rosenberg said worked well with the materials and message the show was hoping to send.

“I think a lot of teenagers today are really nervous about the state of the world so I think because Trashion is so kind of post-apocalyptic we’re trying to sort of encourage people and be like you can make a change both my making your own costume and beyond the event,” he said.

The free event was Aug. 11 at the Mockbee in Cincinnati.
