What You Need To Know

  • The funeral for Donovan Lewis was at the Christian Valley Baptist Church
  • Friends and family gathered to celebrate his life and remember him
  • Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is still looking into the incident

Friends and family, along with members of the community, gathered at Christian Valley Baptist Church to mourn the loss of Lewis.

One of those was Derinda Garrett, a friend.

She said that Lewis had once lived with her and that her own children grew to love him. She expressed her frustration about what happened.

“This has to stop, the injustice has to stop. The innocent nonsense killing has to stop. He was young, he had a baby on the way. And he used to come to my job every day buying baby clothes and he didn’t even know what he was having yet. He just knew he was going to be a father,” she said.

Marika Brown, another friend of the Lewis family, came to the funeral. Her son, also a victim of gun violence, passed away in April 2019.

“Donovan was a friend of my deceased son. This is very unfortunate and something needs to be done about it,” she said.

Family members and friends spoke highly of Lewis throughout the funeral.

His father said that Donovan was the type of person to take less so that others could have more.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident. Lewis was apparently asleep and unarmed when Columbus police entered his apartment in the early hours of Aug. 30 to execute a warrant.
