A local community college will host two free manufacturing boot camps this September to introduce individuals to in-demand careers in advanced manufacturing. The boot camps come amid continued demand for manufacturing workers across the Miami Valley.

Sinclair Community College will host both week-long boot camps from Sept. 12-16 and Sept. 26-30 at the Dayton campus.

The camps are geared toward individuals interested in learning about and getting a start on manufacturing careers. Each week-long boot camp offers an overview of the history and opportunities in computer numerical control (CNC) while providing a hands-on introduction to the basics of safety, programming, setup and operating of both milling centers and lathes.

The first boot camp was held in August, which saw seven students complete the boot camp and participate in interactive class sections on safety, blueprint reading, Computer Aided Design (CAD), CNC Machining set-up, precision measurement, operation and lean manufacturing.

Students who participated in the boot camp also received training on resume preparation and interviewing. All seven students graduated from the class, earning two Sinclair articulated credit hours and the opportunity to interview with manufacturing companies. Three of the students have accepted jobs.

“Sinclair’s first Manufacturing Boot Camp was a tremendous success, and we are excited to offer this free opportunity to more students and job seekers who can learn about careers that offer excellent pay, stability, clean environments, and advancement opportunities,” said Ron Ulrich, industrial engineering technology chair at Sinclair Community College. “Manufacturing has evolved and there is no better time than now to consider this rewarding career field.”

The advanced manufacturing industry is expected to provide 25,386 average annual job opportunities through the year 2028 with an average annual pay of more than $63,000, according to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services. In 2020, 13% of all Ohio workers were employed in manufacturing.

Student participants earn two credit hours from the Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) 1100 Manufacturing Boot Camp course. High school teachers and counselors can earn 28 hours of ECU credit. There is no cost for participants. Each week-long session is limited to 12 participants.

In addition to the September boot camps, Sinclair will offer two boot camps per month through the Fall 2022 semester. The dates of these boot camps are:

Oct. 10-14

Oct. 24-28

Nov. 14-18

Nov. 28 to Dec. 2

Dec. 12-16
