School Market Program helps fight hunger in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — The Greater Cleveland Food Bank hosted its School Market Program at St. Martin De Porres High School, one of 37 locations in the area that it hosts these programs to help stop hunger in Cleveland communities.

Citizens bank has partnered with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank on this initiative.

Brittany O’Connor is the Vice President of Public Affairs Market Manager for Citizens and has worked on this project for a while. She explained what exactly the School Market Program is.

  • Last year they were able to help over 32,000 households and want to top that this year 

“So through this program, produce and other shelf-stable items are delivered to 37 schools once a month, including the school we’re at today, St. Martin De Porres High School, that food is available to students, their families, staff and neighbors in the community,” she said. 

She said that she and many of her coworkers are passionate about this project. 

“At Citizens we believe that when our communities prosper, we all thrive,” she said. 

Feeding America said that one in six Ohio children face hunger, so the goal with this program is to be more than just a temporary fix. O’Connor explained the future plans for the School Market Program. 

“The School Market Program is very popular and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank has been so innovative in addressing hunger, but also working to address the underlying causes of hunger and ending poverty,” she said. 

Last year they helped over 32,000 households and they are hoping to top that this school year.
