AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Marathon was held on Saturday, marking the 20th year of the race.

Anthony Boarman, a high school teacher in Akron, has run the half marathon in Akron for five years. He believes this marathon is very special to the community.

What You Need To Know

  • 20th Akron Marathon was held on Saturday
  • It brings the community together, whether running or watching
  • Lori Trehan was there to honor her late husband

“It’s the 20th year for the marathon so it’s just become a really fun event for the city to come out and support and just be a part of,” he said.

Lori Trehan, a spectator on Saturday, has been to each Akron Marathon race, but this was her first time not seeing her husband cross the finish line. Her husband Todd recently passed away. This would have been his 20th time running in the Akron Marathon.

“The Akron Marathon was Todd’s holiday,” said Trehan. “So we have to keep it Todd’s holiday, so we have to be out here.”

In order to keep the tradition alive, Trehan’s son ran the marathon this year in a team relay.

“Even though he’s not here, he’s being represented out here today,” she said.

Trehan plans on carrying on her husband’s legacy each year at the Akron Marathon.
