ACT scores decline to lowest point in 30 years

OHIO — ​According to a report recently released by ACT, the national average ACT Composite score for the Class of 2022 high school graduating class is 19.8, the lowest score in 30 years.

In a news release, ACT CEO Janet Godwin, said, “This is the fifth consecutive year of declines in average scores, a worrisome trend that began long before the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has persisted.”

Spectrum News spoke with Cedarville University Vice President for Enrollment, Scott Van Loo, Ph.D., about the report. He noted that there are two schools of thought on the reasons for the continuing decline in ACT scores. 

“There were two things that took place here: One is that the averages were trending in that direction to begin with, and the pandemic also just exasperated it,” Van Loo said. 

He also provided insight into the key findings of the report and college readiness.
