BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine announced a $57.8 million safety grant to more than 700 schools across Ohio on Nov. 28.
Beachwood City Schools is one district and is receiving $600,000 in safety grants and plans to upgrade the school’s security.
“This will only enhance our safe buildings,” he said.
In each of the district’s six buildings, school officials plan to install key fobs at access points to the building and some classroom, in order to limit the amount of people that can get in the building.
Veon explained they also plan to put in new high resolution video cameras.
“That’s proactive,” he said. “That’s trying to prevent more access to our buildings. Where the video cameras I think are really important, but those are reactive.”
He said there is no guarantee that any changes can always guarantee the prevention of an incident.
“Knowing that it’s not 100% guaranteed that tragedies won’t happen,” he said.
Although, he hopes this gives some students and families peace that they are doing what they can to keep people in their schools safe.
“Improving our facilities and this kind of grant money helps go a long way. Hopefully, it just allows people to have that much more comfort,” he said.
Veon hopes the changes begin next summer so that they will be implemented during the 2023-24 school year.
