CLEVELAND — Guardian’s third basemen José Ramírez is leaving a lasting legacy on Cleveland.

What You Need To Know

  • As part of the Fields For the Future program, the new turf field will be constructed in the Clark/Fulton neighborhood in Cleveland
  • Ramírez wanted to donate this field to one of the largest Hispanic neighborhoods in Ohio
  • The park will act as the home field for Lincoln West High School
  • Construction has been underway and is set to be complete for the spring 2022 season

Ramírez and the Cleveland Guardians Charities are gifting a new state-of-the-art turf baseball field.

Nelvin Santiago, a Lincoln West high school freshman, gained a passion for playing baseball after his grandfather.

“He always used to talk to us about how he played baseball when he was younger, and we all sat down with him to watch baseball,” Santiago said. “He would just brag about how good he was at baseball when he was younger.”

His passion for the game continued to grow, and he now plays for Lincoln West High School, a school that for years never had a home field.

“This is such a special day, a special moment to really provide this high-quality environment for our young people,” Ward Three Councilman Kerry McCormack said.

In August the Guardians announced the new Ramírez field, a gift from Guardians third baseman José Ramírez and the Cleveland Guardians Charities.

“First of all, I’m honored to give back to the city that has given me so much,” Ramírez said in Spanish during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Tim Casselbery is the Lincoln West athletic director and seed the donation as a launching pad on and off the field.

“There’s more to just being a good player,” Casselberry said. “You know, you have to be a good person, too.”
