OHIO — With New Year’s Eve just around the corner and people gearing up to attend parties, medical experts are reminding us to be cautious when it comes to our health, given the steady rise in COVID-19 cases this month in Ohio.

What You Need To Know

  • COVID-19 numbers have been on the rise this month in Ohio
  • Masks are recommended to add an extra layer of safety
  • If you’re feeling under the weather, doctors advise that you skip the New Year’s celebrations

Dr. Thomas File, is an infectious disease specialist with Summa Health.

He recommends avoiding large crowds of people who are not in your circle of family and friends.

“If a person is sick, they should stay home and not congregate with others,” said File.

He explains that there are other respiratory illnesses spreading this time of year that could also affect your health.

“We’re seeing many more cases, particularly even in the hospital, of influenza than we are of COVID,” he said.

The guidance focused on keeping yourself safe from viruses this time of year is similar to the advice offered at the start of the pandemic, File said.

“Masks provide an additional layer of protection for you as well as others around you,” he said.

File said he hopes people are reasonable and responsible as they ring in the New Year.
