OHIO — Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is considered the most common inherited heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The condition can develop in people of different ages, from young children to adults, but it often goes undiagnosed.
Signs and symptoms of HCM include:
- Chest pain or shortness of breath, especially with physical exertion
- Fatigue
- Arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms)
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting
- Swelling in the ankles, feet, legs or abdomen
Lisa Salberg is the founder and CEO of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA). Salberg was diagnosed with HCM as a young adult and struggled for years with complications and hospitalizations from her HCM, before eventually receiving a heart transplant in 2017.
Along with Dr. Matthew Martinez, a board-certified cardiologist, she talked with Spectrum News about the importance of raising awareness about the condition during February, which is American Heart Month.
