ODNR offers Ohio Boat Operators Guide in Spanish

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently made the Ohio Boat Operator’s Guide available in Spanish to Ohio boaters to help keep them safe on the water.

  • The ODNR collaborated with the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs to make accessible to Spanish-speaking boaters
  • The guide includes information on how to stay safe during certain situations

It is the first time the Ohio Boat Operator’s Guide has been released in Spanish.

“This partnership with the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission will help Spanish-speaking boaters in Ohio learn the ways of the water, encourage required safety equipment, and ensure boaters have everything they need to make cherished memories on our lakes, rivers, and streams,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said.

​The Ohio Beat Operator’s Guide has an overview of rules and boating laws for Ohio that includes: 

  • Boating Laws Specific to Ohio — Operator Age, Life Jackets, Water Skiing, etc.
  • Boat Registration and Titling Laws for Ohio
  • Buoys and Navigation Markers
  • Lighting Requirements
  • Required Safety Equipment
  • Sound Signals

The guide includes information in Spanish on basic boating and different scenarios in a certain position. 

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources worked with the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs to create the Ohio Boat Operator’s Guide in Spanish. 

“This partnership greatly assists our agency in acting as a liaison to bring the Ohio Boat Operator’s Guide Spanish version as well as other important boating safety information to the Hispanic/Latino community in Ohio,” Executive Director of the Latino Affairs Commission Lilleana Cavanaugh said.
