NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Muskingum University President Sue Hasseler provided an update following a reported shooting at the university Friday night following a baseball game.
Hasseler said an Olivet College baseball player was shot and taken to a local hospital. According to the release, the player is in stable condition. His name has not been released yet.
“We will respect the privacy of the injured student as we all await furthur reports on his condition at such time as he and his family think best,” Hasseler wrote in the release.
Law enforcement from Muskingum University, New Concord Police Department and Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department began investigating the shooting after evacuating the crowd. A shelter in place was ordered as the suspect was still at large and was lifted around 9:20 p.m. after one suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect is not a Muskingum student or faculty member, Hasseler said.
The suspect hasn’t been named, but the sheriff’s office said it’s no longer looking for other suspects.
According to the university’s website, the shooting had been at the North Turf. No injuries have been reported among Muskingum faculty, staff and students, the university said. It added that the university is deemed safe, and that while an active investigation is underway, access north of the Thomas Hill parking lot is prohibited.
All athletic events scheduled for this weekend have been canceled, the university said.
Muskingum University is a private institution in New Concord, one hour east of Columbus.
