Rep. Jim Jordan, (R, OH-4) and Sen. JD Vance (R) were two of the first. Jordan spoke with CNN Monday while in Florida at a GOP retreat.

“What changed? President Trump announces he’s running for president and, shazam, now some bookkeeping error from seven years ago, a misdemeanor, is now what they’re going after,” Jordan said. “So it makes absolutely no sense.”

When asked why he wasn’t concerned if Trump broke the law, Jordan said in the CNN interview based on reporting he had seen he didn’t believe Trump broke any laws.

Jordan sent a letter to the Manhattan District Attorney asking for him to provide documents and schedule a transcribed interview by Thursday. The letter alleges the DA would interfere in the 2024 election if he indicts Trump.

On Saturday, Vance defended his endorsement of Trump’s bid for president in 2024.

“I’ve been asked by multiple reporters if an indictment would lead me to rescind my endorsement of Donald Trump. The answer is: hell no,” he wrote in a tweet. “A politically motivated prosecution makes the argument for Trump stronger. We simply don’t have a real country if justice depends on politics.”

Along with Jordan and Vance, Warren Davidson (R, OH-8), a potential Senate candidate, and Rep. Max Miller (R, OH-7) a former Trump aide, released statements over the weekend.

“Paying (two-times) an average American’s income in hush money to a porn star is certainly immoral, but not criminal,” Davidson said in a tweet. “Saying it should be is a different argument.”

Miller said fear from political opponents is pushing the agenda.

“President Trump was a terrific President and he will win again,” Miller tweeted. “Liberal DA’s fixate on fake political scandals – while violent crime rages around them – because they fear his return. It won’t work.”

Meanwhile, Ohio’s more moderate Republicans are staying quiet about the situation.
