CINCINNATI — An Ohio volunteer who’s been mentoring young kids now needs help herself. A flooding disaster forced her family of four out of their home.

What You Need To Know

  • Caharina McNeill and her family came home to see their house destroyed by a flood caused by what they believe was a broken pipe
  • The family was out of town for a week when it happened, and now has to stay in a hotel for at least six months for the repairs
  • Despite the disaster, she continues to be a volunteer mentor to grade school girls

When Caharina McNeill walked into her Cincinnati home. She found her house destroyed from a flood that they believe was caused by a broken pipe.

She said most of what was inside started to mold. The wood frame on the house was the only thing they could save, and her family was forced out.

“At first it was like shock, it was the shock factor,” said McNeill. “Then it was, ‘What now? Where do we go? Where do we take our children?’”

She said she, her husband, and two kids have been staying in a hotel and will probably have to live there for another six to eight months because of damage.

It’s flood damage that she said happened while she was gone on a week-long trip with her family to meet the father she never knew she had.

“I was full of emotions. I mean, I don’t even have the words to describe the emotions that I felt,” said McNeill.

Now she’s not just thinking of her own family, but the kids who are like family.

“When you get here and you start spending time with these kids, it’s just like second nature,” said McNeill.

She volunteers and helps mentor girls through the Ladies of Leadership mentoring program in Cincinnati.

She said despite the disaster at home, they’re the reason she’s not giving up.

“Your heart’s just there,” said McNeill.
