Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan hosts 40th annual National Night Out Aug. 1

AKRON, Ohio — The city of Akron will join communities around the U.S. in hosting family-friendly activities during the city’s 40th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Each of the city’s 10 wards will participate, offering music, refreshments, games and other activities.

National Night Out takes place each year on the first Tuesday in August in thousands of communities in all 50 states, as well as U.S. territories and military bases around the world. About 38 million people are expected to participate, the city said in a release.

The annual event is the National Association of Town Watch’s campaign to promote healthy relationships police and the communities they serve and build community within neighborhoods.

The association’s goal is to help make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live, with residents participating in programs that prevent and deter crime, the association said.

“National Night Out offers an important opportunity for dialogue between our residents, community organizations, faith leaders, elected officials and law enforcement,” said Mayor Dan Horrigan. “The NNO program has deep roots in Akron and I’m excited to celebrate the 40th year of this vibrant, community building evening across all 10 wards in the city.”

Akron Night Out events are set for the following times and locations:

  • Ward 1 – Church of Our Savior , 471 Crosby St., 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ward 2 – Patterson Park Sports Complex, 955 Patterson Ave., 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Ward 3 – Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier St., 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Ward 4 – Buchtel Community Learning Center, 1040 Copley Road, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ward 5 – Joy Park Community Center, 825 Fuller St., 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ward 6 – Ellet Community Center, 2449 Wedgewood Dr., 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Ward 7 – Firestone Park Community Center, 1480 Girard St., 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Ward 8 – Northwest Family Community Center, 1730 Shatta Ave., 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Ward 9 – Chestnut Ridge Park, 1926 19th St., 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ward 10 – Reservoir Park Community Center, 1735 Hillside Terrace, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
