What to know before heading to polls for Aug. 8 special election

OHIO — Spectrum News has a checklist for voters for the Aug. 8 special election, including valid types of IDs that will be accepted, a list of polling locations and how to check that you visit the right one.

Election Day is Tuesday. That means absentee ballots sent by mail had to be postmarked by Aug. 7. The ballots can also be returned in person to the county board of elections by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day.

Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and remain open until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Valid forms of ID

Voters are now required to show a valid Ohio or federally issued photo ID when voting in person. If you do not have a state-issued photo ID a free state one can be obtained through the BMV.

Valid IDs include:

  • Ohio driver’s license
  • State of Ohio ID card
  • Interim ID form issued by the Ohio BMV
  • A U.S. passport
  • A U.S. passport card
  • U.S. military ID card
  • Ohio National Guard ID card
  • U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ID card

All photo IDs must have an expiration date that has not passed, a photograph of the voter and the voter’s name which must conform to the voter’s name as it appears in the Poll List or Poll Book. An unexpired Ohio driver license, state ID card or interim documentation with a former address is an acceptable form of ID when the voter’s current address is in the Poll Book.

Polling locations

Find your polling location, the secretary of state’s website. It offers a full list of Ohio counties. Select your county and enter in your address to find the correct location to place your vote.

There has been a strong turnout of early voters for the special election on Issue 1.
