OHIO — Whether you’re trying to help those affected by the war between Israel and Hamas or the Afghanistan earthquake, it’s important to know if your charitable action reached the intended region. Lately, scammers have been trying to take advantage of relief efforts, experts warn.

What You Need To Know

  • More than 2,000 people have been injured or killed from the earthquake in Afghanistan
  • Total deaths have surpassed 3,000 in both Israel and Palestine
  • Over a dozen Americans have been killed in the war
  • Scammers can target those trying to send relief overseas

In times of war or natural disasters, scammers will try to take advantage of those trying to help on social media by using artificial intelligence or fake websites. The Better Business Bureau offers guidance when looking for a relief fund or charity organization:

  • Make sure the charity or organization has a presence in the affected region
  • Watch out for claims that say “100% of the proceeds are going to be used for relief” because most reputable organizations have fundraising and administrative fees
  • Watch out for social media scams as many social media sites do not vet the accounts or websites on their platform
  • Contact reputable organizations to find out what’s needed

Judy Dollison with the Central Ohio Better Business Bureau said it’s best to give through an established organization rather than directly to the region.

“The logistics and the timing for delivery and distributing clothing or other items can really be challenging,” said Dollison. “Relief organizations are better equipped to know what’s needed and distributed really efficiently. We always recommend that you work with them, if possible.”

It’s estimated around 2,000 people were killed or injured as a result of the earthquake in Afghanistan and the number of casualties continues to increase in the Israel-Hamas war. Families in both Israel and Gaza have been displaced from their homes and communities. The BBB said it’s important to do your research before writing a check or transferring a payment.

“Individuals are really trying to get aid to those who need it,” said Dollison. “A week or two later, maybe they may find out that the organization that they donated to is an illegitimate organization or even in some cases, some well-meaning organizations that just don’t have the right processes in place to control that particular view. Again, it goes back to doing that due diligence and researching the organization before you make that donation so that you do know and have confidence that your money is going to those who need it most.”

The BBB suggests checking out its list of accredited charities and organizations and to report any online scams on their Scam Tracker website.
