COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lawmakers are hammering out the details of the 2023 Farm Bill.

What You Need To Know

  • The Farm Bill is a multi-year law that governs United States food and agriculture programs
  • The Farm Bill is renewed every five years
  • The first Farm Bill was passed into law in 1933

“The Farm Bill is a huge piece of legislation that maybe should be misnamed the Food and Farm Bill,” said agriculture expert Andy Vance, who also is executive director of the Poultry Science Association.

The Farm Bill is broken up into 12 titles: Commodity Programs, Conservation, Trade, Nutrition, Credit, Rural Development, Research, Extension and Related Matters, Forestry, Energy, Horticulture, Crop Insurance, and Miscellaneous.

“If you can keep farmers farming profitably over time, that’s better for the country. That was the original idea of the farm bill,” Vance said.

The Farm Bill is typically renewed every five years. Since 1933, Congress has enacted 18 Farm Bills.
