“Today, let’s all remember that a kid from Akron can do anything with hard work,” said a statement from the City of Akron.

James was crowned the NBA scoring king after he scored his 38,388th career point Feb. 7.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had the record for nearly 39 years with 38,387 career points.

As James was given the microphone, he asked the Lakers to cheer and stand for Abdul-Jabbar before thanking everyone involved in his career.

James was 16 years old and a student at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School when he was invited by Michael Jordan to workouts in Chicago.

“A lot of players know how to play the game,” James said as a teenager. “But they really don’t know how to play the game, if you know what I mean. They can put the ball in the hoop, but I see things before they even happen. You know how a guy can make his team so much better? That’s one thing I learned from watching Jordan.”
