Browns to honor Soviak, military at Sunday’s game

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns announced the organization will honor active military personnel, veterans and their families throughout Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

  • Sunday’s game will also include a flyover of a C-130

Among those being honored will be the family of the late Navy Corpsman Maxton Soviak. Soviak died in August as he was among 12 killed in an attack at the airport in Kabul while serving in Afghanistan. 

Along with Soviak’s family, members of the Milan Edison High School football program are invited to the game as special guests. Soviak was a member of the Edison football team, and served as team captain his senior season. 

Soviak’s family was also honored last Saturday at Ohio Stadium during Ohio State’s home game against Purdue. 

Prior to kickoff, members of and recruits from the Marines will display the flag during the national anthem, sung by Staff Sergeant Crysta Beatty of the Ohio National Guard, the Browns said. A flyover by a C-130 operated by the 910th Airlift Wing from the Youngstown Air Reserve Station will occur before Sunday’s game.

The Browns also announced that the team will honor Anthony Yassall in their weekly First and Ten Community Spotlight. Yassall, 95, is a Purple Heart recipient who served in World War II.
