WHITEHALL, Ohio — An Ohio boy is out to show how small acts of kindness can have a big difference in people’s lives.

What You Need To Know

  • A 10-year-old boy from Whitehall is spreading small acts of kindness through “Carter Kindness
  • Carter Kefauver started it as a way to make others smile
  • He would do blessing boxes, volunteer work, and more recently, he’s donated bags for children dealing with crises
  • ‘Carter Kindness’ started two years ago

Carter Kefauver, 10, is filling up 75 Crisis Care Bags for something he cares about.

“I just like to help others and make other people smile,” said Carter.

Carter and his mom Robin are making them for children dealing with crises.

“Pop-its, fidget spinners, a little teddy bear, a little snack in case they get hungry… These are items that police officers say will best help children in a crisis,” said Robin.

It’s part of what he calls ‘Carter Kindness’, which is a nonprofit Carter started for small acts of kindness whether through blessing boxes, charity work, or other initiatives like this.

The idea came to Carter when his mom won a raffle drawing, but refused the prize.

“She (my mom) won a raffle, and I said ‘Why did you give all the money back?’,” said Carter. “And she said ‘It only took $5 to be kind’, and I said ‘I want to be kind too.'”

That’s when ‘Carter Kindness’ was born.

Donating the Crisis Care Bags is just one of many initiatives that go hand-in-hand with ‘Carter Kindness’.

Carter says officers with Whitehall police will be the ones giving them to the children dealing with crises.

And though Carter can’t meet the kids personally, he, at least, knows he’s not only making their day, but he’s inspiring others like Whitehall Police Chief Deputy Dan Kelso

“There’s a lot of people out there that need help right now. And when you have somebody like Carter that recognizes that you can be one of those people, too, and we need more of him,” said Dep. Chief Dan Kelso.

Carter’s mom couldn’t be any more proud of him.

“I’m very, very proud of him,” said Robin. “I believe he’s making a difference in our little corner of the world, and we all feel it, don’t we?”

Carter Kefauver was awarded the 2023 Opportunity Ambassador award for all the work he’s done through ‘Carter Kindness’, making him the youngest person to earn that title in the Whitehall community.
