In the aftermath of this week’s mass shooting at a private elementary school in Nashville, many parents are concerned about the questions their children may have. Fear and anxiety are emotions that some children and teens may experience.

In an interview with Spectrum News, Dr. Courtney Cinko, medical director of emergency psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, offered guidance for parents on how to have these discussions with their children.

“So you have to use simple language and language that your children will understand,” said Cinko. “Some kids really do get worried about these things, but other kids don’t. So, the first step is, you know, asking your kids about it and having that conversation—but in an age-appropriate way, so that you’re using the right kind of words so they understand and then they know that you’re there to support them though it all.”
