  • Cincinnati Children’s new mental health facility will be the largest of its kind in the U.S.
  • The facility has 83 family-friendly rooms for children being treated for mental health issues
  • The William K. Schubert, M.D. Mental Health Center opens in mid-October
  • The center cost about $108 million

The William K. Schubert, M.D. Mental Health Center will be the largest facility of its kind in the country said Dr. Michael Sorter, the director of Children’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

During and after the pandemic, the medical center and other facilities across Ohio have seen an increase in children coping with mental issues. According to the Data Book,  mental health challenges increased in Ohio kids by more than 42% from 2016 to 2020.

“What we know now is that Covid had a great impact on young people,” Sorter said. ”It’s time for all of us to collectively put our shoulders to the wheel and make sure we’re doing the right thing for young people now.”

Gov. Mike DeWine, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval and other politicians joined the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“We can’t really tackle the mental health problem with our children without these hospitals,” DeWine said. “What Cincinnati Children’s is doing today is just another great, great step forward.”

The new facility cost about $108 million and includes a cafeteria, basketball courts, and 83 private rooms that come equipped with an additional bed for a parent to stay with their children.

It will start accepting patients in mid-October.
