Cincinnati offers cooling centers for heat advisory

OHIO — Across the state, temperatures are expected to hit the 90s on Wednesday, but it will feel like the triple digits, prompting heat advisories in the Toledo, Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus areas. 

The City of Cincinnati is offering recreation departments and the public libraries as a way to keep cool in the high temperatures.

Cincinnati Recreation and Cincinnati Public Libraries are open as cooling centers during normal hours Wednesday.

The recreations centers are open from 7 a.m. to at least 7 p.m. with several remaining open until 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.

Cincinatti Public Libraries are also open as an escape.

Most libraries are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or to 9 p.m.

There are many ways to stay safe during extreme heat, but a few quick are:

  • Drink plenty of water. Do not wait until you are thirsty.
  • Stay in air conditioning whenever possible. If you do not have an air conditioner, use movie theaters, malls, libraries and other public places that are cool. (If not fully vaccinated, Columbus Public Health recommends wearing a mask.)
  • Avoid beverages with alcohol, caffeine and sugar because they lead to dehydration. 
  • Eat light meals.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and limit them to morning and evening hours.
  • Learn the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them.
  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
  • Check on family members, friends and neighbors.
