DAYTON, Ohio – The city of Dayton has activated an emergency management plan ahead of severe winter weather set to hit the area over the next few days.

What You Need To Know

  • Frigid temperatures, snow and ice are expected to hit Dayton Thursday into Friday
  • Dayton city staff will begin working “around the clock” Wednesday to help pretreat and clear streets
  • DPD asked residents not to park on city streets if possible
  • Recreation centers will serve as warming shelters during the day through at least Friday

The forecast calls for frigid temperatures and a mixture of ice and snow set to hit the greater Dayton-area Wednesday and continue through at least Friday morning. Ice totals are expected to total as much as one-quarter inch, per the city.

In response, the city administration released Wednesday various elements of its approach to helping keep the public safe throughout the storm. The plan includes everything from its approach to road treatment to working with partner agencies to provide emergency services to residents in need.

The Department of Public Works will turn its attention to prioritizing the pretreatment and snow and ice removal from Dayton’s 1,700 lane-miles of city streets, according to a release from the city. Crews will begin “working around the clock” as things begin to unfold on Wednesday.

Public Works’ “first priorities” are streets like highways and bridges as well as bus routes and streets near public schools and hospitals, according to the city’s snow and ice removal priorities. It also includes downtown.

Crews will then move on to hills and streets known as “collectors,” which are roadways that move traffic from less-traveled residential streets to more heavily traveled arterials.

Residential streets are known as “third priorities.” The city’s plan calls crews to plow and treat these roadways when snow accumulation totals 4 inches or more.

The Dayton Police Department asked residents and visitors not to park on city streets during the weather event, if they can avoid it.

Fewer cars on the streets will make it easier and safer for emergency vehicles to get through to medical calls and critical incidents, according to DPD. It will also make it easier for city snowplows to clear paths on streets.

In response to the expected cold temperatures and ice, the city will open its recreation centers as warming centers. The rec will be open during normal business hours, 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.:

  • Greater Dayton Recreation Center, 2021 W. Third St., 937-333-4732

  • Northwest Recreation Center, 1600 Princeton Ave., 937-333-3322

  • Lohrey Recreation Center, 2366 Glenarm Ave., 937-333-3131

The city is coordinating with overnight shelters and other partner agencies as well.

In its release, the city administration reminded commercial and residential property owners that it’s their responsibility to maintain the sidewalks on their respective properties. This includes the removal of snow, ice and debris.

The city of Dayton plans to post regular storm-related updates to its Facebook, Twitter and Nextdoor pages.
