CLEVELAND — He’s known as the coach of the community, but now Ted Ginn is coach of the city.

What You Need To Know

  • Cleveland celebrated “Glenville Tarblooders Day”
  • The celebration included a motorcade and a rally at Cleveland Public Hall
  • Ginn and Glenville won the first football state championship for a Cleveland Public School

He’s the first public school coach in the city of Cleveland to win a football state title.

“This group of kids was special. They were special because they believed first and learned later,” Ginn said.

The city dubbed the day as Glenville Tarblooders Day, with a motorcade from Glenville High School to Public Hall, giving alumni fans and family a chance to rock their Glenville red.

“Not only did these young men show what greatness looks like in Cleveland, but they made history in our great city,” Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb said.

Coach Ted Ginn has been involved with Glenville since the 1970s. He started as a security guard and volunteer assistant coach. He eventually became head football coach and sent countless players to Division 1 schools. He founded Ginn Academy in 2007, an all-boys school dedicated to creating structure in the students’ lives, who often come from difficult upbringings.

“It means that we can achieve greatness for our town, our city, our kids (and) our community,” Ginn said after winning the championship. “It’s hard for me to explain because so many people before me tried and didn’t succeed. But now we can prove that we are great and our city should be proud of these young people here.”

Glenville alumni said after all these years, they’re glad to see Ginn finally get his ring.

“He loves these kids they’re like his own,” Alum Doris Totten said. “He’s been there for them. He’s been there for my son. He’s just an all around good guy. He really is.”
