CLEVELAND — Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb announced the city’s next chief of police on Thursday: Dornat “Wayne” Drummond, who also served as interim chief of police for the last six months.

He filled the position in the interim for six months following the departure of former Chief Calvin Williams. Williams stepped down on Jan. 3, 2022. He said he made the decision after he learned former Mayor Frank Jackson would not re-run for the position.

Drummond has served with the Cleveland Division of Police for 33 years, according to the city. He served in the 1st District, then moved up the line from sergeant to lieutenant, and eventually became commander in the 5th District.

He was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and grew up in Cleveland.

Drummond also served as public information officer and taught law enforcement ethics at Cuyahoga Community College. He is a graduate of the University of Toledo.

“I am honored to be selected to lead the force during this period of transition. Keeping Cleveland safe has always been my No. 1 priority,” Drummond said when Bibb selected him as interim chief in December.
