CLEVELAND — Charles Oakley, a Cleveland native who was drafted by the Cavaliers but was traded before he could ever play a game in a Cleveland uniform, is hosting a number of events throughout town in conjunction with All-Star Weekend.
One of those events is part of his Oak Out Hunger campaign. Oakley will visit and prepare meals Friday for the residents of Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry.
“It was only right with the NBA All-Star coming to my hometown, that I got my team together so we could get out in the community to make a difference,” said Oakley.
Oakley was in the NBA from 1985-2004, but never played for the Cavs.
Oakley was back at his alma mater, John Hay High School, to snap photos with former teammates and host a pep rally for current students.
“It felt great, walking into this school I left here in ‘81,” Oakley said. “I’ve been back but it’s just nice to see the changes, see the students, they are so joyful.”
Throughout the weekend, Oakley will host several benefit parties for his foundation. A listing of events are available on his foundation’s website.
