CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Fire and Cleveland’s Department of Safety want citizens to be prepared with the holdays right around the corner.

What You Need To Know

  • Cleveland Division of Fire shared safety tips for the holidays
  • Cooking fires are four times more likely during the holiday season
  • If a fire breaks out on your stove, smother (or cover) it with a lid or cookie sheet
  • If in doubt, get out of the house and call for help

Lieutenant Domonic Draft, part of the public education unit of Cleveland Fire, said one of the most important things is to not leave a stove unattended and to turn off the stove.

“You want to cut it off, in this situation the knobs are behind the fire so what you do is get a cooking sheet or lid and slide it over to smother the fire,” Draft said. “Then you can turn it off.”

Draft said the lid should should be kept overtop for ten minutes, but if necessary a fire extinguisher can be used

The department’s other tips include never leaving a stove unattended, never letting children cook unsupervised and when in doubt, get out and call for help.
