CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns announced two weeks ago Deshaun Watson as the club’s new quarterback, a move that caused anger and disappointment among some fans concerned about allegations he sexually harassed or assaulted nearly two dozen women.

What You Need To Know

  • It’s been nearly two weeks since the Browns announced Deshaun Watson as the club’s next quarterback
  • The trade was met with scrutiny from fans concerned about the 22 civil lawsuits Watson faces alleging sexual assault and misconduct. Watson denies the allegations
  • Since the announcement, more than 2,000 donors have donated to the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, totalling more than $100,000

Many are now responding by showing support for the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.

Since the trade was announced, more than 2,000 donors have combined to donate more than $100,000 to the Rape Crisis Center.

About a third of those donors have referenced Watson as their reason to give.

Many are donating $22 to show support for the 22 accusers.

The Rape Crisis Center said a record number of people have signed up for ambassador training that aims to prevent sexual violence. Calls to the 24-hour hotline have increased by more than 130 percent since the Browns’ announcement.

“I think with every donation, with every post on Facebook, with every tweet, showing that this decision is not OK with certain people is a tremendous allyship with survivors of sexual violence. Being on the receiving end of support of this magnitude has been incredibly humbling,” said Sarah Trimble, chief external affairs officer at the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.

Watson continues to maintain his innocence. Two Texas grand juries declined to file criminal charges, but he faces 22 civil lawsuits.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry said the club reviewed the allegations and said the organization felt “good” and “comfortable” with adding Watson to the squad.

“This is not easy and I have sincere sympathy for anyone who has been a victim of sexual violence,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski. “I think Deshaun is ready to make a positive impact in this community.”
