POWELL, Ohio — Visitors to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Martin Luther King Jr. day will see part of their admission fee go back into the community.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Central Ohio branch of the NAACP to honor King’s work.

From each admission, $1 will be donated on Jan. 16 during operating hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Standard parking fees will still apply, $10 per vehicle, free for Zoo members.

“The historic contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King carry on in the work of NAACP, whose mission is to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion,” said Columbus Zoo and Aquarium President and CEO Tom Schmid. “As an organization dedicated to supporting inclusion and diversity ourselves, we are proud to partner with community organizations that foster a sense of empowerment and belonging in Central Ohio.”

According to a news release, many animals will be visible from heated, indoor shelters including Manatee Coast, the Reptile Building, Discovery Reef and more. Some animals are more playful during the colder temperatures as well, including polar bears and cougars.
