COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Feb. 13, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium lost Hermie, a 12-year-old 2,000 pound American bison.

 What You Need To Know

  • Hermie was a 12-year- old American bison
  • He was euthanized after not waking up from anesthesia despite multiple attempts to revive him
  • The 2,000 pound American bison was scheduled to be transported to another location

Hermie was humanely euthanized after not waking up from the anesthesia after multiple attempts to revive him. He was anesthetized so the care team can careful transport him to the trailer for his move.

He was scheduled to leave the Columbus Zoo and travel to another Midwest zoo. His recent habitat was built in the 1980s and due for upgrades. Hermie would have the opportunity to be with a herd that the Columbus Zoo care team felt was needed.

The transportations for any animals are planned by the Animal Care, Animal Health, and Facilities teams before their official move.

Before Hermie’s transportation date he needed a pre-shipment exam for his vitals. On Jan. 11, his exam included a physical, bloodwork, and other tests and he received a clean bill of health according to the zoo’s Facebook page.

Hermie was born at The Wilds in 2010, and five months old he was transported to the Columbus Zoo.

The care team remembers how Hermie enjoyed apple and carrots, resting by sprinkler on a humid day, and allowed visitors to understand bison history.
