Dayton police: Inmate receiving treatment at Miami Valley Hospital shot security guard, then shot himself

DAYTON, Ohio — The Dayton Police Department said an inmate receiving treatment at Miami Valley Hospital shot a security guard and then shot himself Wednesday morning. 

According to Dayton police, the inmate was from Montgomery County jail and who has not been identified, was being treated at the hospital. At 9:45 a.m. the inmate grabbed a security guard’s gun, shot the guard and then ran out of the E.R. and shot himself. The guard is currently receiving treatment at the hospital, and the inmate died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said. 

The guard’s condition is unknown. 

As of 11:18 a.m., Dayton police are asking the public to avoid the emergency room area of the hospital as homicide detectives continue to investigate. Patients are currently being rerouted to other area hospitals. 

Officials said the self-inflicted gunshot would was reported to police close to 10 a.m. The hospital gave an “all clear” around 11:20 a.m.
