WILBERFORCE, Ohio — Central State University will be center stage for Ohio political debates.

The Ohio Debate Commission is hosting the debates at the main campus in Wilberforce. The Commission invited U.S. Senate and Ohio gubernatorial primary candidates to participate.

A debate between the Democratic Senate candidates will take place Monday, March 28 at 11:30 a.m. and the Republican Senate candidates will debate the same day at 7 p.m. Both debates can be viewed on Spectrum News 1 or the Spectrum News app.

Leading up to the debates, Spectrum News 1 Ohio visited Central State, hosting a town hall, entitled, “Decision 2022: The Promise Of The Vote.”

Student panelists expressed excitement for their HBCU, noting that the debates bring national attention to their successful academic programs, campus plans, and alumni. They also discussed their hopes and dreams for the future, as well as their concerns about the status of voting rights, the politicization of climate change, and the burden of college loans.

Central State University President Dr. Jack Thomas told Spectrum News that it is an honor to be the host site for the debates, highlighting the impact events will have on students.

“I hope this will encourage many of them to vote, and let them know that every vote counts,” Thomas stated.
