DAYTON, Ohio — As summer camps wind down and schools start up, a lot of kids across Ohio will take some good memories back to school. For some lucky kids near Dayton, their memories have been recorded as their own television show they learned how to produce.

What You Need To Know

  • All Hands In is working with the Miami Valley Communications Council to teach developmentally disabled students how to produce their own tv shows
  • Students learn how to work as hosts, directors, camera people and editors
  • The program is free for students

“I’m the funny guy,” said Drake Horning, who learned how to host his own show.

Drake and other students with developmental disabilities learned about television production at the Miami Valley Community Council.

“The last two weeks with Josh and his crew have been a beautiful time,” said Liberty Lord, the volunteer coordinator who has been working with the students. “These guys have been excited about what I have to teach.”

Horning said he learned about making content, filming and editing.

The camp and instruction have been free for the students as part of a collaboration between the public access studio and a group called All Hands In.

“Our purpose is to help people with developmental disabilities gain greater access to community relationships and social capital,” said Josh Welhener, the force behind the group.

“A lot of our guys are very interested in YouTube and video editing so we thought it’d be a great idea to partner with Miami Valley Communications Council because they have such great resources and they know so much more than we do,” Welhener said.

“This is an amazing place to express yourself and practice freedom of speech,” Lord said.

“It’s a beautifully welcoming environment.”

Horning agreed.

“We really hit it off,” he said.
