COLUMBUS, Ohio — As people across the nation continue to voice outrage over Tyre Nichols’ death, Donovan Lewis’ mother, Rebecca Duran, spoke out and pleaded for action.

What You Need To Know

  • Donovan Lewis was shot and killed by Columbus Police officer Ricky Anderson five months ago
  • Donovan’s mother pleaded for action on behalf of her son following outrage over Tyre Nichols’ death
  • Lewis’ family is calling for Anderson to be indicted and terminated from his job

Duran and her attorney called Nichols’ death “heartbreaking” and “sad,” but now Duran has questions, concerns and a call for justice on behalf of her deceased 20-year-old son.

Lewis was shot and killed by Columbus Police Ofc. Ricky Anderson in Aug. 2022 while Anderson was serving a felony warrant. In the five months since the incident, Anderson has been placed on administrative leave but no charges have been filed. Duran is calling for action just days after the City of Memphis filed murder charges in Nichols’ case.

“It’s really sickening, too,” said Duran’s attorney Rex Elliot, “that it takes another death of a person of color in this country to have us sitting down and ask for action. And if something is not done, I can promise you as we sit here and do nothing, it’s going to happen again.”

BCI’s investigation into Lewis’s death ended on Dec. 8, but attorneys representing the case say no further progress has been made.

Lewis’ family is calling for Anderson to be indicted and fired.
