CINCINNATI — For more than 160 years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have offered students the opportunity to experience a diverse and inclusive community and learn more about African-American history.

One southwest Ohio elementary school is learning more about the history in a creative way.

Just recently, students at Woodford Paideia Academy celebrated their 4th annual HBCU Day. It’s put on by the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s National Alumni Association Greater Cincinnati Chapter.

Students were assigned a specific HBCU to research and create their own shirts. They then presented their work to classmates and had a little fun with a parade.

“[My favorite part was] being able to show everybody my facts about my school and showing my designs for the shirts and all the cool facts on the back,” said Olivia Roberts.

The HBCU Day at Woodford was one of several events throughout different schools in the Cincinnati area.

Organizers hope these events will give students something to think about when choosing where to go for college.
