COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio is transitioning to the coldest weeks of the year. If you plan to take part in winter sports and activities, like pond hockey and ice fishing, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is encouraging you to do so safely.

According to ODNR, cold water can cool a body 25 times faster than cold air of the same temperature. ODNR Directory Mary Mertz said if you’re on the water, “we want to make sure everyone is prepared and that starts with wearing a life jacket.”

ODNR has more information about the dangers beneath the surface here and they offer safety information on winter recreation here.
