LANCASTER, Ohio — Laura Wersell has participated in the Fairfield County Fair since she was a young girl, and now she continues the tradition with her family.

“We were looking for something that we could do, we would be able to show at the fair as a family,” said Laura Wersell, a Lancaster resident.

What You Need To Know

  • The Wersell family of Lancaster continues to participate in the annual art show at the Fairfield County Fair
  • The Wersells have created mixed media, paintings, as well as cookie jar murals
  • The Fairfield County Fair runs through Saturday

When she had kids of her own, Wersell and her husband Patrick, who home-school their four children—Eli, Eleanor, Evelyn, and Ester, recognized their art talent and decided to get them involved in the fair’s competition.

The family has participated for the last 12 years.

“Since we don’t do art all through the school year, we try and do it right in the beginning,” said  Laura Wersell. “So we focus for about a real solid month ondoing artwork for as many categories as the kids have interest in.”

Ester, the oldest, hand-crafted this cookie jar for this year’s fair.

The 19-year-old continues to submit art projects for the fair even after graduating high school.

“I like to do sketches and painting cookie jars. I’ve always enjoyed it. It’s just a lot of fun,” said Esther Wersell. “My mom puts a lot of hard work and energy into making sure that we’re having fun and enjoying school.”

The Wersells will be back again next year, and Laura Wersell hopes the Fair art display will be a family tradition for years and perhaps generations to come.

“I really like foxes ’cause they’re just so cute. I just had a lot of fun with these,” says Evelyn Wersell.

LAura Wersell said the family picks something new each year to make it more exciting.

“To see all of it all together is really exciting for them, and something to look forward to,” said Laura Wersell.
